Warranty
Websters online dictionary defines warranty as follows:
war•ran•ty noun \wór-ən-tē, wär-\
: a written statement that promises the good condition of a product and states that the maker is responsible for repairing or replacing the product usually for a
certain period of time after its purchase.
By definition, a warranty places the risk and associated costs of repair or replacement of the product covered on the manufacturer or seller for the stated period of warranty.
Why would a company sell a product into a 5-10 year application with only a 1 or 2 year warranty? Why would you buy a product that is backed by only a 1 or 2 year warranty for an application with a 5 to 10 year life cycle?

Extended warranties don’t change the durability or reliability of their product nor the manner in which they’re designed or manufactured. Just because a manufacturer can “sell” you an extended warranty doesn’t change their confidence in the product and shouldn’t change yours either.
Consumer advocate groups, such as as Consumers Union, advise against purchasing extended warranties unless they can be purchased at manufacturers cost. David Butler of the Consumers Union says, "The extended warranty is definitely in the best interest of the company because if the product breaks down they want you to be satisfied with it and buy another one when the time comes, but isn't often in the best interest of the consumer..."

The best made products often have the best warranties because they’re less likely to need them. The warranty is the defining statement of the confidence a manufacturer has in their products. Because it involves risk, we take it seriously. You should too.
