Extendible Controls

Drivers are trained to use their mirrors and remove all distractions when backing and maneuvering. When a video safety system is considered, care and attention should be given to the location and placement of both the camera providing the image and display the operator will use to ascertain the information from the camera. Best practice suggests the location of the video safety system display be in direct line of sight with the right-hand mirror so that the operator can see both the mirror and the display – they are intended to compliment each other and used together is most effective.

In addition, a proper installation should locate all controls within easy reach of the operator so the operator would not be distracted when using them. When an operator has to reach across the cab to control a function of the safety system, it’s effectiveness for improving safety is greatly diminished.

In 2010, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported that 18% of fatal car accidents and 20% of non-fatal crashes and almost 11% of those involving commercial vehicles were the result of distraction. (NHTSA – “Traffic Safety Facts.” Research Note. Distracted Driving 2009. DOT HS 811 379. Washington, DC: National Highway Traffic Safety Administration”, September, 2010).

The INTEC Car Vision® video safety system incorporates an extendible wired remote control to facilitate proper location and installation so that all operator functions can be located at the driver’s fingertips, allowing the operator to keep their eyes on the road. Further, because it’s wired and mountable, it can’t become dislodged or misplaced, further ensuring the systems integrity.

Some systems on the market use displays with integrated controls that require the operator to reach. Others offer a ‘visor mount’ demanding the full attention of an operator which becomes a total distraction and has very little, if anything, to do with improving safety for the operator. It’s important to understand the critical attributes of the “right” camera system for every application. It’s more than a “picture on the monitor”.

A camera system is a safety system – not an accessory.

The criteria for consideration of the right camera system for the application should be defined by the degree which it will enhance safety while operating the vehicle. Not solely on price, but rather on value. How will the system enhance the safe operation of the vehicle over the life of the vehicle?

Which camera system provides better value to the customer?

Operating heavy equipment and large vehicles demands an operator’s full attention. Best practice suggests the location of the video safety system display be in direct line of sight with the right-hand mirror so that the operator can see both the mirror and the display – they are intended to compliment each other and used together is most effective. Are you getting a safety system or an accessory? When specifying a video safety system, care should be taken to properly evaluate the correct use of the system. Just as important, proper installation of the system should ensure the system is being used to its maximum benefit. Certainly care should be taken to ensure any system intended to improve safety is not in fact a detriment to safety.
